Infinity Signs Mitsubishi Evo X Time Attack & Drag Racing Car

The Infinity Signs Evo X is a great example of a dual use car, with it starting out as a drag racing car that is now being developed for Time Attack racing.

This car is sponsored by The Tuners Group and by Works Bell. The car is based in South Australia.

The car will continue to be used at the drag strip as well, with different aero configurations available depending on whether it is running on the circuit or down the quarter mile.

Instead of running a traditional manual transmission, the car runs the Evo X SST Sportronic Shift Transmission.

On the drag strip, the car has run a 10.83 at 127.88mph at Willowbank Raceway, which the owner of the car advises us makes the car the worlds fastest Evo X SST down the quarter mile, as well as the world's first 10 second Evo X SST.

Described by Andrew Hawkins of Motive DVD as "the most radical time attack car in Australia", this R34 is built specifically to compete against the top time time attack cars in the world.

The car finished a credible 7th in the 2010 World Time Attack Challenge at Eastern Creek International Raceway with a 1 min 34.109 second lap.

The car then returned to Eastern Creek for the 2011 World Time Attack Challenge with a new aero package including a DJ Engineering rear wing from The Tuners Group, and ran a 1 minute 31.905 second lap ... a full 2.2 seconds faster than the previous year and fast enough to take 6th place.

In an interview with Mark Berry about the lap time improvement, Mark said ...

Tomaszewski R35 GT-R

As part of our 2010 World Time Attack Challenge activities, The Tuners Group is very pleased to announce our sponsorship of the white Nissan R35 GT-R driven by Marek Tomaszewski.

The car is competing in the Clubsprint Class at the 2010 World Time Attack Challenge, as well as in the 2010 NSW Supersprint Series.

This R35:

  • took 3 outright round wins in a row in the second half of the 2010 CAMS Supersprint Championship season

  • finished 1st, 1st, 1st and 2nd in the last 4 races of the season

  • took the Class 4D win in 4 rounds of the 9 round series, and second place in Class 4D at the other 5 rounds

... so the cars worst finish in Class 4D pointscore all season at all individual rounds was 2nd.

The car also won the Clubsprint Class trophy at the 2011 World Time Attack Challenge.

On Day 2, Marek improved his Day 1 time by a further 0.077 of a second, posting a 1:42.4910.

This gave Marek the Clubsprint Class win by 0.217 of a second, with Miles Tauber's Croydon Racing Developments Nissan R35 GTR in second place with a 1:42.708, and Ovidiu Zaberca's Hi Octane Racing/Advan Mitsubishi Lancer Evo in third place with a 1:43.0140.

To put Marek's winning time into perspective against last year's times from the 2010 WTAC, the Clubsprint Class at WTAC 2010 was won by Nicholas Kalis in his Evo with a 1:44.3780, so Marek's winning time at WTAC 2011 was 1.887 seconds faster than the winning time at WTAC 2010 in Clubsprint Class.

Last year at WTAC 2010, Marek came 6th with a 1:45.6250, so his winning time this year of 1:42.4910 is a massive improvement of 3.134 seconds better than his time last year.

Porsche 986 Boxster Tiptronic Track Car With Paddle Shifter

Sometimes we have the privilege of being involved with some very special projects indeed, and this Porsche Boxster is one such project.

The owner of this car is a former basketball player in the USA, who experiences problems with his feet as a result of his basketball. Unfortunately his foot problems mean that it is difficult for him to operate a clutch pedal with his left foot.

The same problem is quite common with former athletes, and also can affect older drivers with knee issues.

So what do you do when you have a foot or knee problem, love mid engine Porsches, and want a track car ?

The solution for this project was a unique combination of German engineering, Japanese engineering, US know-how and Australian know-how ...

Base vehicle, engine and drivetrain

The car is a 2001 Porsche Boxster S.

The projects power goals have been achieved by fitting an engine from a 911 - in this case the 3.6 litre engine from a 2004 Porsche 996.

To address the owner's foot problems, the car was fitted with a transmission that is an unusual choice for a track car, but one that is ideal in this application - a Porsche Tiptronic semi-sequential transmission.

With the help of with the help of the owner's mechanic in the US and a friend out of state, the owner completely upgraded the Bosch Motronic ECU from 7.2 to 7.8 which consisted of adding cam timing sensors and re pinning wires into a new and flashed ECU.

The car is only one of a dozen Porsches to have this electronic upgrade for engine swap purposes and the only one in the world that we know of that is mated to a Tiptronic semi-sequential transmission.

I am 6'5" and have feet problems from basketball when I was younger so

  1. I had to have the tip when I bought the car as it was my only car at the time

  2. I need a smaller steering wheel because I plan on time trailing the car after I show it off so to say...

So I wanted to put a race wheel in it, with some sort of paddle set up... I have the electronic knowledge now to make just about anything work, but I wanted some paddles... I like the Works Bell units because of their ease of use... but I am not the biggest fan of have the paddles stationary.

So the challenge was set to develop a bolt on kit, incorporating a quick release, and with the paddles rotating with the steering wheel, all while maintaining engineering, fit, finish and quality levels befitting such a stunning project car.

Works Bell's paddleshifter units are precision engineered in Japan and revered in the Japanese car tuning world.

We had used various parts from Works Bell paddle shifters in custom racing applications, like on the Revo off road racer which won the South African Off Road Championships for special vehicles, a European WRX Rally Car project, the Mark Berry Advan Hi Octane Racing Nissan R34 GT-R Time Attack car (pictured) in which the paddle shifter is used as a custom system to control the 4WD transfer case / torque split system , and a number of other custom installs.

Back in 2009, The Tuners Group spent a lot of research and development time working out what combination of Works Bell components would be required for a detachable paddle shifter system for the Nissan R35 GT-R. This was for a very special R35 GT-R project car being built by one of our Australian customers

As we are one of only 2 exclusive national distributors for Works Bell worldwide, we have access to Works Bell's highly trained factory engineers in Japan, which is vital for the development of custom installations that have "factory fitted" appearance, engineering and quality levels.

We came up with a unique combination of parts to make it all work in the R35, and as shown above the end result was a massive success.

The R35 GT-R kit was then made available to R35 GT-R owners as a bolt on kit by The Tuners Group, and were received with acclaim by the R35 GT-R tuning community.

So for the Tiptronic Boxster project, we drew on our engineering skills and development experience from the R35 GT-R detachable paddle shifter project, and The Tuners Group devised a similar kit for the Porsche Boxster (shown above).

A standard length Works Bell steering boss was used in this particular Boxster instead of a Works Bell short boss, because the 6'5" tall driver has long legs and sits with the driver's seat a long way back, so he found that the standard length boss placed the steering wheel in an ideal driving position for him. Drivers who prefer the steering wheel further away and sit closer to the steering wheel can of course use a Works Bell short boss instead.

When we told the owner of the Boxster Tiptronic project car that we could supply him with a paddle shifter setup for his Boxster, with all the wiring concealed, and the paddle shifter and steering wheel detachable, and with the paddles rotating with the steering wheel, thereby meeting all the owner's project goals, he replied by email ...

You have also sold me on the quick disconnect and conductor connections... I was just planning on doing a clean coiled cord setup, but this is SO MUCH cleaner, that I think it would actually add to the appeal of the car!

I also think that this setup could really develop a following in the states with the upper level Porsche owners, especially with the growing popularity of the Porsche PDK transmission.

Just like the detachable paddle shifter kit for the R35 GT-R was then made available from The Tuners Group as a kit for other R35 owners to enjoy and fit to their own cars, the detachable paddle shifter kit for the Boxster is now also available for sale to Boxster owners.

The detachable paddle shifter kit for the Boxster can be purchased with the quick release available in a range of colours, so if you want a stealthy integrated look to your kit, a black version is also available.

Versions for the Boxster with either a standard length boss as used on the project car or with a shorter boss are available, so you choose which option places the steering wheel in your ideal driving position. The exact position of the steering wheel can also be fine tuned down to 10 mm increments with an optional Works Bell Steering Wheel spacer, to achieve the perfect driving position.

A detachable paddle shifter kit for the BMW E46 M3 is also now available from The Tuners Group, with 2 installs underway on the first two E46 M3's to receive the kit.

Of course we can also draw on our experience gained with the R35 GT-R and Boxster kits to devise similar detachable paddle shifter kits for a wide range of cars. Contact us if you are interested in a similar kit for your car.

The Rapfix Racing Quick Release is engineered and precision manufactured in Works Bell's state of the art production facilities in Nagano Japan, by highly skilled fabricators and engineers.

Unlike splined quick releases which use splines that you have to line up, the Works Bell Rapfix Racing quick release uses Works Bell's patented ball locking system as seen on the world reknowned Rapfix II quick release. There are no splines to line up !

So instead of needing to line up splines to re-attach the steering wheel, you just slide the steering wheel onto the steering column with the wheel turned to any angle of rotation and spin the wheel, and the quick release will then lock when the correct angle of rotation is reached.

Additionally, when the steering wheel is removed from the steering column, the Rapfix Racing locks open automatically, so there is no need to pull on the release collar when re-attaching the steering wheel. You just slide it back on, spin it til it locks automatically, and go.

It consists of the heart of the Works Bell Paddle Shifter Kits as seen on vehicles like the R35 GT-R, Porsche 996, BMW E46 & E90, 350Z, RX-8, and other high end semi-sequential Japanese vehicles.

Works Bell in Japan reacted to demand from The Tuners Group's racing customers, and in November 2008 released the Works Bell Paddle Shifter NEO Universal - a universal paddle shifter ideal for custom installs on racing cars and road cars alike.

Building The Formula SAE Racecar

The 2009 car is powered by an Aprilia motorcyle engine, and one of the students developed a highly innovative sequential shifting system to handle the gearshifts, via the Works Bell Paddle Shifter NEO Universal.

With a power rating of 45kW (60.3 hp) but a weight of just 193 kg, the car has a power to weight ratio of 3.2 kg per hp, and a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.67 seconds.

The shifter system is hydraulic, with hoses supplied by Stauff and pumps supplied by Hypac.

The system is more responsive than the previous pneumatic system implemented, providing a faster, more reliable and easily controllable gear shifting.

Launch from line has been very successful, and easy paddle shifting provides quick up and down shifts with automatic actuation of the clutch.

There is also a neutral button that can engage neutral from any gear. Edward McMillan, Mechatronics engineer, was responsible for the design and implementation of this system.

On the skidpan, it pulled a massive 2G's, which is a testament to the highly skillful design of the cars suspension devised by the students.

The Pilatus R35 - An Australian Nissan Skyline R35 GT-R

Meet the Pilatus R35.

Sponsored by The Tuners Group, this car is one of the most highly developed R35's in Australia.

This car is one of the first R35's in Australia to receive serious modifications.

While many R35 GT-R owners have been worried about modifying their cars, the owner of this car has jumped right into modifying his R35 with gusto and a no compromise, engineering driven, high quality parts approach.

In terms of body modifications, the car has carbon fibre intakes, bonnet, bootlid, vents and parcel shelf and a pre-preg carbon fibre rear wing.

Suspension is adjustable Penske shocks. Brakes are carbon ceramic brake disks.

Engine wise, as well as the carbon intakes, the car sports dual ARC intercoolers, fed by upgraded turbochargers. The Australian built turbos use IHI cores but with ball bearings to help with faster spool up.

Fuel is delivered by 800cc injectors.

To keep the car cool, the car runs a rear differential cooler, transmission cooler pan, and a front mounted transmission cooler. The car also runs a high volume oil pan, which allows the GT-R to hold 7 litres of engine oil.

To get all the power to the ground, the car runs a very special transmission, hand assembled and blueprinted with a bunch of strengthened internals, and engineered to handle 700 hp continuous.

In the cockpit, the car sports a range of Works Bell goodness and a set of carbon fibre seats for road use, and Velo seats for track use.

The steering wheel is attached to a Paddle Shifter assembly developed and manufactured by Works Bell. This Paddle Shifter turns with the steering wheel.

The Works Bell Rapfix II Quick Release is fitted with the bright yellow version of the Works Bell Flipper For Rapfix II Quick Release (For JAF & N1 Racing Regulations).

The entire steering wheel / quick release / paddle shifter assembly is attached to the steering column with a Works Bell Short Steering Wheel Boss Kit Hub For Nissan Skyline GT-R R35.

Synth19 Ginash George Honda Acura NSX

This NSX is a perfect example of an NSX done right.

This car is owned by US based modifier Ginash George. Ginash's previous project car was an incredible 2003 Nissan 350Z project car which was featured in Turbo Magazine, in an article on tunerzine.com and in this article on thespeedlounge.com.

So it's very clear that when it comes to modifying Japanese cars the right way. Ginash definitely knows how to build a car right.

Ginash's new project is this incredible NSX which he is detailing the build of on the Synth19 Blog.

Tying in with the beautiful Imola Orange Pearl paintwork, Ginash has fitted a Works Bell Rapfix II Quick Release and Team Orange Works Bell Steering Wheel, along with a Works Bell short boss for Honda NSX.

The car also has had a number of modifications made to it, including a very rare stainless steel and titanium exhaust system, and an ultra rare Zanardi edition NSX shift knob (from the limited edition of 50 Zanardi NSX's sold in the United States), with a unique mesh shift boot complete with carbon fiber trim from the JDM spec 2002 NA2 NSX-R.
