Unlike splined quick releases which use splines that you have to line up, the Works Bell Rapfix Racing quick release uses Works Bell's patented ball locking system as seen on the world reknowned Rapfix II quick release. There are no splines to line up !
So instead of needing to line up splines to re-attach the steering wheel, you just slide the steering wheel onto the steering column with the wheel turned to any angle of rotation and spin the wheel, and the quick release will then lock when the correct angle of rotation is reached.
Additionally, when the steering wheel is removed from the steering column, the Rapfix Racing locks open automatically, so there is no need to pull on the release collar when re-attaching the steering wheel. You just slide it back on, spin it til it locks automatically, and go !

Works Bell have become an SFI Participating Manufacturer in the SFI Spec 42.1 (Steering Wheel Quick Disconnect/Release Program) and the Works Bell Rapfix Racing Quick Release has passed the SFI tests.
The SFI Foundation, Inc. (SFI) is a non-profit organization established to issue and administer standards for specialty/performance automotive and racing equipment.
SFI was originally a foundation run by SEMA, the automotive aftermarket trade organization. The letters "SFI" stood for "SEMA Foundation, Inc." Although SFI is now completely independent from SEMA, the Foundation has retained the name SFI Foundation, Inc. but the "S" no longer means SEMA.

The Rapfix Racing can be used with compatible three hole competition steering wheels with a standard mounting hole Pitch Circle Diameter of 50.8mm (2 inches).
It can also be used with compatible 6 bolt steering wheels by using the Works Bell "6H" 3 bolt to 6 bolt steering wheel adapter.
It is developed especially as a steering wheel quick release for formula cars such as Indy Racing League, Formula Ford and other open wheeler formulas, however some teams also use it in saloon cars, drag racing cars and drift cars.

The Rapfix Racing features a shaft which is welded to the steering column made from SCM435 chromium molybdenum steel, a socket made from heat treated A7075-T6 aluminum alloy (known in Japan as "extra super-duralumin") with special plating to provide durability, a sleeve made from aluminum alloy and SUS420 stainless steel, and ball bearings made from SUJ2 Steel. SUS420 is used for the liner in order to produce the lightweight and high-strength of the sleeve.
A protective cap is installed on the top of the shaft to protect the plug top in the event of hard / careless use. If the protective cap is damaged through hard use or misuse, it is possible to replace the protective cap with a new one.
With a length of 63.5mm (except the weld part), a diameter of 69.6mm and a weight of just 300g, the Rapfix Racing is a precision engineered, lightweight, ultra strong component built with the same high levels of Japanese attention to detail and craftsmanship as all Works Bell's other products.

Strength & Safety Testing
The Rapfix Racing has passed the rigorous NAPAC standard (a standard for after market products in Japan).
A screwing test was done to check the operation of steering wheel to radial power. There was not any change in the shape after being pounded by dead loads of 29.7kg.m (291N.m).
Moreover, there was not any change in the shape after a bending test of dead loads of 19.8kg.m (194N.m) in order to examine the effect when a driver impacts the steering wheel in an accident.
According to the results of these tests, although the bending test and screwing test based on regulation loads caused the permanent transformation and the tolerances increased under these extreme test loads, the product is still possible to be detached and attached and it was not broken by the testing loads.
Therefore, these tests prove that the steering wheel can still be operated when large loads act.
According to these results, Rapfix Racing has the same or more strength than the spline style Quick Release Hub of other companies.
Works Bell also tested how much load can be handled when the plug and socket are pulled strongly. They were not destroyed by 3754kg(36.8KN).
The test was ended when the bolt was destroyed which holds the steering wheel to the quick release . The quick release function could be still operated. So in other words, the tensile strength of the Rapfix Racing exceeds the tensile strength of the bolts used to attach the steering wheels to the quick release.
Therefore, it is confirmed that Rapfix Racing could endure the pull power of 68G (based on the standard weight of a driver according to Japan Safety Standard of 55kg).
Works Bell also did 10,000 times repeated attachment and detachment tests for testing the endurance. Works Bell proved that the Rapfix Racing is not broken after 10,000 attachment and detachment tests and it is still possible to drive, attach and detach, although the tolerances increased of course in this extreme endurance test.
Development and technology
The Rapfix Racing Quick Release was developed based on the patented ball locking quick release technology invented by Works Bell. This technology is seen on the Rapfix series and bolt on Works Bell Rapfix II Quick Release, which have made a record of over 20,000 sales and are used extensively by the top teams in Japan including a huge number of D1GP teams, and by the most successful tuners in the world including JUN Automotive.
The Rapfix Racing Quick Release product is the ideal weld on quick release hub that is compact and lightweight used specifically for competition use.
Eight holes grooved in the plug side match the delicate steel balls used in the bearing. This provides a firm lock for both radial and lateral movement. The steel balls are released into the “free” position when the sleeve is pulled, then the socket can be detached from the plug.
The sleeve section, once pulled, is locked. Once remounted onto the plug section, the sleeve automatically locks back into position.
When reattaching a separated Rapfix unit back onto it’s hub, the position of the wheel does not matter due to the fact that the Rapfix will only lock back into place in the same position in which it was disconnected.
Other quick release mechanisms require the wheel to be positioned in a specific location before reattaching the wheel.
Furthermore, Works Bell’s unique technology ensures that there is no shakiness or play because the steel balls keep constant and consistent pressure on the plug at any time. Therefore, it plays a big part in the driver’s severe steering wheel operation.
In addition, in order to establish the reliability of Rapfix Racing in a race, a new mechanics, Cam Lock, whick certainly locks the radial loads by combining the plug and the socket, is adopted.
Therefore, security is assured by putting the Cam Lock System together with the Ball Lock System.
